FORGING A NEW PATH, BLDG EXPANDS DESIGN AND PRINT COMPETENCY WITH CRYPTOGRAM
Covington, KY – BLDG Refuge, LLC, a Covington-based boutique branding and design firm, joins forces with designer and printmaker Jon Flannery of Cryptogram, one of Cincinnati’s premier design and hand-hewn print resources.
BLDG and Cryptogram are crafting the foundation for a new creative model that blends knowledge of market trends in urban contemporary art with branding and design expertise, aiming to:
• Target internationally recognized urban artists and musicians looking to widen their exposure with memorable and compelling design through the unique expression of screen-printing.
• Establish a strong national presence with the revival of impeccable hand printing capabilities.
Jay Becker, partner at BLDG said: “Cryptogram is a remarkable brand known for exceptional quality in both design and printmaking techniques in Cincinnati. The addition of Cryptogram is in full alignment with our strategic growth plan and will serve to reinvigorate existing client relationships, while strengthening our core capabilities.” Flannery’s specialized aesthetic and printmaking mastery are expected to bring another layer of quality and originality to BLDG’s branding and design capabilities. Becker adds, “Cryptogram brings an aspect to our work that previously did not exist. Jon’s background in fine art, combined with his design thinking and meticulous attention to detail as a print artist is something that will work to further set us apart.”
Screen-printing was made popular in the 1960s and 70s by Pop artists and Op artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Indiana. While the technique is industrially used, the fine art and design applications of screen-printing are experiencing a resurgence of popularity as artists, musicians and brands alike search for a way to differentiate themselves through the craft of hand printing with unusual inks on high quality papers.
Established in 2010, Cryptogram is a graphic design & print studio founded by Cincinnati Art Academy alumni Jon Flannery. With a dedication to the process of print and an eye for the details, Cryptogram has worked with clients such as Landor Chicago, People’s Liberty, Visionaries + Voices, and Cincinnati Art Museum to develop promotional, identity and print design materials. An area of specialty for Cryptogram is designing and hand printing show posters for the music industry, locally and internationally. Musical talent Cryptogram has created posters for includes The Harlequins, Small Black, WHY?, and Steely Dan, among others.
